The village of Stalos
Village history
According to Cretan mythology, Stalos village received its name from Talos, the gigantic ancient robot. Appolodoros reports that Talos was Crete’s guard and defender against all enemy attacks and had its home in the region where Stalos is found today.
However, a more recent view claims that Stalos got its name from the time of Turkish occupation when the Turkish land concentrated their sheep under the tress of the region in order to take them to Galatas and milk them.
Nowadays, Stalos has a population of 500 who are divided between the upper and lower parts of the village. Despite the fact it is only 9 km away from Chania, the upper part of Stalos still remains much of the old-fashioned charm of a traditional Cretan village. Its houses are typical for the island’s agricultural classes. They are simple with tile roofs and front and back garden for vegetable plantation and for family animals. There are three taverns, two cafes and two mini markets in the village. The majorities of villages are olive tree farmers and have the reputation of being warm and hospitable.
Nearby Taverns
First time visitors to Crete often go for the beaches and then are captivated by the mountains and it invariably takes a number of visits to discover what really makes the island tick. It’s true, that the beaches are fantastic and the scenery breathtaking, but surely you wouldn’t go there for the food? Or would you?
The answer is yes, of course you would, if you knew the right taverns to eat and a stay at our Orestis Hotel provides the opportunity to sample the delicacies of two of the best village taverns in Crete, almost without getting out of bed!
Kafeneion ‘Miglakia’, Levendis, and Matigis. One of the secrets of eating well in Crete is not to choose one large main course but to share lots of small plates of appetizers, known in Greek as Mezes.
